چکیده

We present the analysis of an approximately 3 year long Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) monitoring campaign of the canonical soft state black hole candidates LMC X-1 and LMC X-3. In agreement with previous observations, we find that the spectra of both sources can be well-described by the sum of a multi-temperature disk blackbody and a power law. In contrast to LMC X-1, which does not exhibit any periodic spectral changes, we find that LMC X-3 exhibits strong spectral variability on time scales of days to weeks. The variability pattern observed with the RXTE All Sky Monitor reveals that the variability is more complicated than the 99 d or 198d periodicity discussed by Cowley et al. (1991). For typical ASM count rates, the luminosity variations of LMC X-3 are due to changes of the phenomenological disk blackbody temperature, kTin, between ∼ 1 keV to ∼ 1.2 keV. During episodes of especially low luminosity (ASM count rates < ∼ 0.6 counts sec; four such periods are discussed here), kTin strongly decreases until the disk component is undetectable, and the power law significantly hardens to a photon index of Γ ∼ 1.8. These changes are consistent with state changes of LMC X-3 from the soft state to the canonical hard state of galactic black holes. We argue that the long term variability of LMC X-3 might be due to a wind-driven limit cycle, such as that discussed by Shields et al. (1986).

The black hole candidate LMC X-3 varies by a factor of four in the soft Xrays on a timescale of 200 or 100days (Cowley et al., 1991). We have monitored LMC X-3 with RXTE in three to four week intervals starting in December 1996, obtaining a large observational database that sheds light on the nature of the long term Xray variability in this source. In this paper we present the results of this m...

State Transitions in Lmc X-3

We carried out a multiwavelenght study of the black-hole candidate LMC X-3 with XMM-Newton. The system showed a transition to a low-hard state, in which the X-ray spectrum was well fitted by a simple power law. It then returned to a high-soft state, characterised by a strong disk-blackbody component. The line-of-sight absorption column density is < ∼ 4 × 10 20 cm −2 , consistent with the foregr...

XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS observations of LMC X-3

We report the results of preliminary analysis of the XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS observations of the candidate black-hole binary LMC X-3 between February and June 2000. The observations covered both the soft and the hard X-ray spectral states. The hard-state spectra were dominated by a power-law component with a photon index Γ ≈ 1.9. The soft-state spectra consisted of a thermal component with a mu...

An INTEGRAL Hard X-ray Survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud

Two observation campaigns performed in 2003 and 2004 with the INTEGRAL satellite have provided the first sensitive survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud with an imaging instrument in the hard X-ray range (15 keV 10 MeV). The high energy flux and long term variability of the black hole candidate LMC X–1 was measured for the first time without the contamination of the nearby (∼25′) young pulsar PS...
